Other miscellaneous explanatory notes:

When we began to enter 2020 data, we noticed that the on hand January 1, 2020 number was incorrectly listed within the state reporting system. The system showed 15 dogs on hand and 3 cats on hand. This is the exact reverse of the actual on-hand species count on 1/1/2020 - 3 dogs and 15 cats. We contacted VDACS for guidance as the system does not allow shelters to correct this count number. We were advised that "Unfortunately, we are unable to make any changes to the numbers that were submitted in the previous year's report. For your 2020 report, you would need to adjust the numbers that you input so that the end totals reflect an accurate count going forward and then use the 'other/miscellaneous notes' box to note any inaccuracies. Even though the numbers wouldn't necessarily match your records, as long as you include clarifying notes to explain your numbers and why they are listed the way they are in the report, then you are covered and then the numbers going forward would be accurate for future reporting purposes." As advised, we have adjusted the numbers in the "other" column so they will be correct moving forward.

Animals transferred from out of state were part of a rescue operation to assist shelters impacted by Hurricane Isaias.

Individuals familiar with our shelter know that the number of animals that were assisted by our organization this year is drastically lower in 2020 than prior years. This is a result of the Roanoke Valley SPCA being closed for major foundation repairs for the first quarter of 2020. During this time, animals could not be in our facility and sadly no animals were able to be brought in to or adopted from the shelter during this time period.
