The Richmond SPCA took physical custody of 11 cats and 11 dogs whose owners were facing a short-term housing crisis or who were fleeing situations of domestic abuse and temporarily residing in shelters that did not permit pets. In these cases, the Richmond SPCA provided temporary care to the pets, whose owners intended to return for those pets once they were in a position to do so.

The overwhelming majority of the cats who died in our care were neonatal or other motherless kittens, who despite 24-hour foster care and intensive treatment by our medical team, were not strong enough to survive.
