9 dogs and 1 cat were on a courtesy hold;
21 dogs, 10 cats, and 1 fish were on a courtesy hold for owners in hospital;
5 dogs, 2 cats, 1 domestic rabbit, 1 hamster, and 2 rats were on Pet Haven hold (program for victims of domestic violence);
4 dogs, 11 cats, 2 cockatiels, 2 domestic rabbits, 5 fish, 2 lizards, and 2 macaws were on hold because their owner's died.

One cat escaped from its carrier during transport to the shelter and was not recovered.

Other miscellaneous explanatory notes:

1. Wildlife data is provided by Fairfax County Animal Protection Police. Shelter staff does not handle wildlife.

2. Of the 224 animals euthanized in 2020, 165 were either veterinarian recommended end of life, quality of life, relief from suffering; or owner requested end of life where our veterinarian concurred or the animal was obviously suffering without option for recovery.
